Hi all,
Just joined this forum and spent the last 2 hrs reading about brivis woes!!
Didn't quite see my problem though.
Heater (Brivis Buffalo 20: in a rental property)
fires up OK,
fan goes on
and warm air blows through ducts.
5-10 mins later the burners go out
(room hasn't reached the set temp)
unit tries to fire up again
ie the electronic pilot lights the pilot,
but it goes out after a sec or two
the burners do not light up again
(suggesting gas is no longer getting to the burners)
Had a plumber look at it
he said an LED was flashing 3 times on ignition
called Brivis
they suggested resetting by turning off/on at mains
this didn't resolve anything.
Plumber then said the thermostat (old fashioned mercury type) was shot
so replaced it with a new electronic one (honeywell RTH221B)
took a while to work out the wiring
(two wires from thermostat and two wires from a separate switch that turns on the fan)
connected the old thermostat wires to Rh and W terminals
and the two fan wires to Y and G terminals
The unit fired up as before
(suggesting the wring of the new thermostat is OK: or is it?)
then it went out as before
and tried to relight it self as before.
I could see the pilot come on for a sec or two and go out again
(ie no gas delivery to the burners)
No obvious error messages (little spanners etc) on the new controller
but something was flashing on/off
(letters too small for me to read, but the tenant said it says 'return')
I still need to check the return air filter
to make sure they are not clogged with gunk
and the ducts for leaks/failing duct tape etc
BUT I would appreciate any other advice
I'm reasonably handy.
Thanks

I've got a Brivis Wombat 92 gas central heater in the roof. Repair cracked limestone steps. It's winter here downunder. The heater is essential. It's been playing up recently, giving a clunking noise as it attempts to start heating. This has been getting progressively worse.
Having a look in the roof space shows that the pilot light is alight. The spark unit is constantly sparking, even though the pilot light is lit.
The controller board is having fits. All the status lights are lit, and the relay is constantly chattering, and the lights on the controller board glow and dim. It appears to be trying to start but something is not quite right, like it is struggling to get enough power or a contact is not quite making a good connection. The blower cage is free wheeling - not stuck. The motor appears to be getting an intermittent current as it gives the fan a little kick.
I've checked the connections everywhere and everything is tight. The temperature controller unit is a Programmable wall control (part 9460). I've checked the wiring between it and the furnace is intact and the unit appears to be working, with the onboard relay clicking on and off at the temperature trip points. Anybody have any problem isolation tips? Anybody point me to a wiring diagram that is a little bit more detailed than the one stuck on the unit which just shows the connections to the controller. I'm handy with a soldering iron and have repaired circuit boards before.
On a side note, the cool option is not fitted. Is it simply an extra wire between the 'G' terminals on the blower unit and the temperature controller like I read in another post in these forums?

Any other changes needed? Another question: The temperature controller unit is showing a few degrees higher than the actual temperature.
Can it be adjusted? All help and comments are appreciated. G'day from Australia. OK, I climbed up (its a nice warm day today and its quite pleasant in the roof space) and had a good look.
The unit appears to be about twelve years old from the markings on the various components, but is very clean with little dust buildup. The pilot light is on and has a good wide flame. The nozzle that spreads the pilot light appears to be angled, but that appears to be by design rather than something else. The ceramic spark rod is very lightly coated with dust or soot, but the flame spreader is coated with a layer of brown/orange soot. I undid the two pipes (thermostat and pilot gas feed) and the spark wire and cleaned all the items with steel wool, making sure there were no strands left behind and gave it a bit of a clean with a stainless steel mesh pot scrubber. I've reassembled it, making sure the earth screw is secure and tested it.
I'd post a photo but I can't seem to attach anything to this post. Initially when I started everything up again it gave a lot of clunking and cycling through the lights on the controller board, but it appears to have come good. The thermostat tube that sits in the pilot light now has a distinct red glow at the end which wasn't there before. I'm hoping this is normal. The 'cool' option for the fan only works as well now that I have connected the 'G' terminal from the temperature controller unit to the 'G' terminal in the furnace with light mains rated wire. I can probably live with a thermostat that reads a little high - just have to get used to subtracting a few degrees when adjusting! Thank you for your assistance.
I have saved a callout fee and learnt a bit more about gas furnaces. Small postscript: The other day was a windy day and I noticed the lights had a bit of a flicker at the same time as the wind gusts. I reported a fault to the electicity supply company who promptly send a linesman to check.

Where the power line comes to the house the aluminium wires had corroded inside the connectors and the connections were loose and had a spiderweb mess. He clipped a bit off the end of the wires, cleaned them up and reconnected them, all with the power still connected - please don't try this yourself - and put some special anticorrosion and electrical conductivity paste inside the connectors before shoving the wires in and tightening it all up. No more flickers, and the occasional grunting noise when the gas furnace blower fan starts is gone - I suspect that the poor contacts were increasing the resistance for the entire house supply and there was not enough current being drawn to start the electrical circuits correctly. No more probs: Crisp and warm!
